About John

Initially trained as a visual artist and subsequently trained as an Art Psychotherapist.

I have worked with people in crisis for over 35 years, I have been part of a team of utilising Family Therapy within the area of safeguarding young children. Since 1993 have worked in the field of Addiction, specialising initially in Alcohol related problems and since 2008 Class A substances. I have been using Hypnotherapy since early 2009, specifically working with clients who have experienced Trauma/PTSD. Having worked within statutory services for all of my working life I am now embracing self employment as I firmly believe that I have more to offer both clinically and creatively than I am able to give within a statutory service.

Practising Since: 2017

My Experience

John Drinkwater has been working with people “in crisis” for over 35 years. He originally trained as an Artist, and subsequently went on to train as an Art Psychotherapist utilising a psychodynamic / psychotherapeutic understanding of problems. Over time and through a range of training undertaken in various work roles, including child protection and adult mental health, he has moved toward a more pragmatic Solution Focussed approach to enabling people to make positive changes in their lives.

Since 1993 John has worked primarily within Addiction services, initially dealing only with alcohol related difficulties. At the beginning of 2008 he became more involved and interested in working with users of other substances including opiates, cocaine, cannabis and more “novel psychoactive” substances, whilst continuing to work with alcohol related difficulties.

Over the last 11 years John has enabled many people to change their behaviour in positive ways in particular by addressing the issues underpinning their behaviour. He has utilised a specific hypnotherapy technique to enable them to deal with past traumatic experiences which previously they managed by their use of a variety of substances. He routinely works with people to help them deal with past experiences of witnessing or experiencing violence, sexual assault, combat trauma and other personal trauma.

John was trained in Clinical Hypnosis at Central England College of Hypnotherapy. For the first time in his life he is embracing self employment as a way of being able to continue to promote and enable change.

Phobia Hypnosis

I had hypnotherapy with John to treat my phobia of Bangs (ie. Balloons/fireworks etc) I didn't realise just how much it impacted on my life until I spoke about it. This has been something I have battled since early childhood and at times is not only mentally affected but also could be physically debilitating in extreme. John was so professional and re-assuring he put me at ease. The hypnotherapy far exceeded my expectations and still wows me to this day. The results are subtle but very positive. Thanks John
