As I'm sure you already know, people with ataxia have problems with their co-ordination. This is because parts of the nervous system that normally control co-ordination and balance are affected. Some of the first symptoms typically include poor co-ordination of the arms and legs, slurred speech and sometimes problems with vision, hearing and swallowing. Ataxia may progress to patients losing the ability to walk, sometimes leading to total physical dependency.
