Insomnia is one of the most reported psychological symptoms in the country today. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately sixty-four million Americans suffer from insomnia on a regular basis each year. Insomnia occurs almost one-and-a-half times more often in women than men. A 2002 National Sleep Foundation poll showed that fifty-eight per cent of adults in the U.S. experienced symptoms of insomnia more than once a week.
Insomnia describes a persistent difficulty in falling or staying asleep despite the opportunity. Insomniacs often describe the feeling as not being able to rest their mind or close their eyes for more than a few minutes consecutively.
The Impact of Insomnia
Incidences of insomnia are usually followed by a day or more of daytime 'hangover.' The next-day fatigue can cause impaired thinking and decision-making at the least, and a range of mood disorders at the very worst.
Those who suffer from insomnia regularly report daytime fatigue. Daytime 'sleepiness' is reported in only about twenty-five per cent of respondents. Significant impairment in personal, social and occupational functioning can also result from insomnia. Persistent insomnia can even delay the rate at which the body repairs itself whilst recovering from acute illnesses.
Long-Term Effects
Other long-term effects of insomnia can be sleepiness, muscle fatigue, dizziness, hallucinations, and mental fatigue. The most likely cause of insomnia is day-to-day life problems such as fear, stress, anxiety, emotional or psychological issues, trouble at work, financial complications or an unsatisfactory sex life. The idea that the need for sleep decreases as people age is a common misconception. The ability to sleep for long periods seems to diminish as people get older while the need for sleep remains consistent.
Relaxing With Insomnia
Like most 'partially understood' issues attributed to the subconscious, hypnosis has been found effective for helping clients to relax with insomnia. Hypnotic World offers a clear and direct insomnia relaxation hypnosis script. This script combines proven techniques including relaxation, metaphoric storytelling, ideomotor signalling and visualization to recalibrate your client's ability to envisage sleeping peacefully.
The first element of this hypnosis script for insomnia engages visualization to help clients conjure up a safe and comfortable emotional environment. One of the benefits of the hypnotic state is emotional detachment. The multi-sensory visualization in this insomnia hypnosis script engages many streams of sensory input simultaneously fully engaging the client in the process. Using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic cues clients establish a 'safe place' retreat within.
This script then engages the subconscious in metaphoric storytelling. Metaphors are useful for subtly conveying otherwise ideas or concepts to the subconscious in a non-threatening manner. Trance allows communication directly with the subconscious opening access to all the memories, information, and experience stored there. This disarms the conscious filters that would otherwise interpret or influence the nature of the incoming information.
This insomnia hypnosis script combines metaphor with indirect suggestions. Indirect and permissive suggestions are more effective. Indirect suggestions enhance rather than challenge the patient's need for control. The creative nature of the metaphor in this insomnia hypnosis script stimulates subconscious insight. The metaphor reframes the situation to the client's subconscious in an acceptable format. This inspires cooperation rather than resistance, which in turn leads to solutions rather than further repression and lack of sleep.
The 'Art of Sleeping'
The most important element of this script helps clients to 'practise the art' of falling asleep under hypnosis. Visualizing practising falling asleep gives clients the 'virtual' experience of successfully dropping off to sleep without all of the tossing, turning and sighing.
This combination of powerful techniques has the potential to relax with insomnia quickly and efficiently. While any one of these approaches might contribute to your client's relaxation, this script includes a range of hypnotic skills and approaches to offer your clients the greatest potential benefit.
