People may turn to this type of self-sabotage for many reasons. Some use it as a coping mechanism or a way to express overwhelming emotional distress.
Young people may self-harm because they feel numb or as a way to cope with unbearable negative thoughts, memories or feelings.
Those who self-harm do so to try and change how they feel by replacing their emotional pain with physical pain.
Deliberately inflicting pain by cutting or injuring yourself may seem incomprehensible to some. However, the practice is more common than you might think.
Those who self-harm usually do it with no intention of taking it any further. The main reason someone engages in this practice is to release feelings of tension, anger or frustration.
Self-harming helps them feel something when they are otherwise emotionally disconnected from life.
They may even engage in this bizarre practice to get that buzz of positive emotions that come from the cessation of pain from self-harm.
Whatever the reason behind the practice, doesn't matter. There are healthier ways to manage those strong feelings besides self-harming, which is what this session is all about.
