If your client has a fear or phobia about taking medication they are certainly not alone. Pharmacophobia, also known as the fear of taking medicine, is a real issue.
Such a fear not only involves taking medication but also possibly having difficulty swallowing pills.
Sometimes this fear can come from a lack of knowledge about medications. If your client is having difficulty taking their prescribed medication, it's important to know that their doctor prescribed the medication for a reason.
A fear of medication is not unusual. However, it can affect one's life and health. Medications are designed to keep your client healthy. They can even keep them from having to undergo a hospital stay.
Pharmacophobia is real. It is an abnormal and persistent fear of taking medicine often caused by a negative past experience.
Sufferers from this disorder may experience undue anxiety when it comes to taking medicine. This phobia can become quite irrational if left untreated.
