Fear of flying/ turbulence

I'm doing a session soon with a man who developed a severe fear of flying just over a year ago after a flight with bad turbulence. I have an idea of a script reassuring him and building confidence by looking back at past flights as he used to live flying until this incident. He is afraid he won't even be able to get on the plane and past time he used xanax and alcohol to get through it so I'm trying to think of something extra to put in the script so he will feel calm on reaching the airport and going through check in etc as that's where your brain starts overthinking! Any ideas? He works as a manager so is obviously a confident type person and likes to be in control. Thanks!

You should if you haven't find out if he has a fear or a phobia connected to it. It will dictate which way to progress. If it is tied to a fear which means something in reality The exposure therapy may help. If it's a phobia not based in reality, then you'll have to back track the cause of its development.

This is a classic case of (Aero)phobia or fear of flying. There are several techniques to address his fear. You can establish the SUDS scale/hierarchy and do a hypnodesensitation. Start at the lower end of the hierarchy and eventually work your way up. These may take several sessions. Stabilizing your client is crucial before doing the hyposensitization. During each stage of exposure on the scale, incorporate relaxation techniques to help manage anxiety and maintain emotional balance.
You can also use rewind technique to address phobias.

Usually just a plain script with ego-strengthening will not help to alleviate irrational fear.
