Help with a Script
I’m hoping you can help me with a client. He is going through BCG treatment for bladder cancer. For 18 months he has been getting up to urinate every hour. He has started measuring it and there is ¼ to ½ pint each time. So I’m not sure what to do. I don’t see a possibility to stop him getting up, or he’ll wet the bed.
He said he drinks 2 pints of water a day. But doesn’t drink after 5:00pm
I’m completely stuck – Is there anything that can be done. ?(From my side)

Hi Renie. When looking at illness I often look at acceptance. The active bladder is something that is part and parcel of the illness and often people find that symptom annying and hard to deal with. As him why he is measuring it. If it is for medical reasons he might have to continue, but if it is for his own obsessions to prove the higher amount of urination, he might need a focus on getting rid of OCD behaviours and then move toward acceptance of his condition. Try focusing on strategies that will help him manage the constant getting up without making it the main focus of his day. Drinking less fluid will not help as his medication and treatment is often the reason for bladder weakness
