Unwanted thoughts of cigarettes!
So - my client who had been smoking for 60+ years has now been a non-smoker for a whole week and is loving her new smoke free life! (Thankyou Faith for your guide to getting clients to stop - I followed it to the letter!) However, she says cigarettes keep popping into her head - not that she wants to smoke one, but she keeps thinking about them. Any suggestions for how I could help her banish these thoughts?

I tell my clients that "You are your actions, not your thoughts. So feel free to think about smoking, BUT JUST DON'T SMOKE! If you remain smoke-free for the next 5 years, but think about smoking every day - you'd still be a non-smoker." That should alleviate some burden, and naturally the thoughts will subside. Depending on the clients usage, she may have taken over 10-million puffs on a cigarette in her lifetime, it's natural to occasionally think about, especially after only a week off them (well done by the way).
