How know how deep to take clients?

How do you know how deep to take someone? Is deeper always better? I was taught to do induction, progressive relaxation, then a long deepener with 4 or 5 different counts/steps down. The deeper asks them to try move arms and legs as well as say letters none of which can they do. Then I do the suggestions. The sessions are 1.5 hours though. Is there a better way or how do you know?

In my experience deeper is not always better. If you watch you client, you can see how deep they are going - face flattening out, changes in complexion etc. I find that a fairly simple deepener then some pacing/leading... watch their breathing and feed it back "..as you breath in...and breath out you are drifting deeper". If in doubt try installing a finger IMR if that works they are deep enough for most therapeutic work.
